Two Georgia Republican Senators Say They Will Oppose Cloture on Immigration Bill

June 20, 2007 – 1:19 p.m.

Georgia Republicans Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss will vote against moving the Senate’s immigration overhaul measure forward, the senators said today.

The bill's supporters can try to spin this all they want but for Isakson and Chambliss to walk away is a major defeat! These two Senators gave their "Grand Bargain" an air of legitimacy at least. Because both these guys ran on border security and they contributed to the bill.

I would also like to point out that they may get their cloture on this bill, but without Isakson and Chambliss on board they will not get the votes for passage.

OK, now when I go to the Republican BBQ, I will express my thanks to these two.

It took them a long time to come around though. This issue has done serious damage to both of them here at home. Several of the radio talkshow hosts here have been bashing them non-stop. Calling them turncoats, traitors, etc. On Saturday, there was a recall petition being circulated agains Chambliss. It may be too late for him.

Good. Start focusing on other senators to get them to respect the will of the people!

Not to throw cold water on a celebration, but anything can happen between now and then. Remember that senators are being threatened with losing key positions, etc. We need to continue to encourage these to senators to stand their ground and don't give into arm twisting and bogus promises.
