    Indians top non-immigrant population in the US

    WASHINGTON: People from India account for the maximum number of the resident non-immigrant population in the United States, latest governmental figures have revealed.

    Of the total number of 1.83 million resident non-immigrants in the US in the year 2008, as many as 400,000 were from India, followed by 150,000 from Canada and 140,000 from South Korea, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said.

    Slightly more than half (53 per cent) of resident non-immigrant were citizens of Asian countries, including India (22 per cent), South Korea (8 per cent), China (7 per cent), Japan (6 per cent), and Taiwan (2 per cent), DHS said in its report based on the figures available till September 2008.

    Europe and North America comprised another 17 per cent each, lead by Canada (8 per cent) and Mexico (7 per cent). The five leading countries accounted for over 50 per cent of the total, it said.

    The resident non-immigrant population includes temporary workers, students, exchange visitors and diplomats, who were legally admitted for specific and temporary purposes with long stays.

    And Indians now comprise the largest ILLEGAL population group in Houston, despite its proximity to Mexico, evidently thanks in great measure to the efforts of TX Sen. John Cornyn to promote the business interests of Indians, both the very wealthy and prospective owners of small businesses in the United States. Together with influencial U.S. politicians like Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA), Cornyn helped found the "India Caucus" in the U.S. Senate, and travels regularly to India, where he reportedly is "treated like a king". Evidently many there, whether legally qualified to do so or not, took Sen. Cornyn's warm extension of welcome to Indians to come to the United States literally.

    This is an additional reason, why, in contacting our elected officials by whatever means, we need to be courteous to them and their staff despite any disagreement with the official's actions and/or views: certainly anyone would rather deal with someone who treats them "like royality" than with someone who, however just their cause, may be loud, rude, and/or downright verbally abusive in any way. ALIPAC always issues cautions about personal courtesy when requesting specific political action from members, and this would seem to be one especially good reason why.

    I wish the bulk of illegals in California were Indian rather than Mexico. Perhaps they are and due to their culture simple arrive, get a job or better yet join a legal family member in business and actually contribute something to the U.S.
    Their children do well in school, they actually graduate, unlike about 47% of Hispanic high school kids who drop out before graduation.

    The next time I see an Indian I'm going to give him/her a welcome hug!

    There is a class difference between most Indian legal immigrants even if they overstay and the Mexican border jumpers. It costs much more to get here from India than Mexico so the relatively few ones that get all the way here are better educated, affluent and motivated.

    They don't just contribute. I'm acquainted with a large number of American IT workers in various parts of the country. The Indians have ways of getting white collar jobs away from Americans, whether the American is a job applicant or a long term incumbent in the job. They have a stranglehold on the contingent IT labor market in some areas, and hourly rates for white collar work have plummetted as a result, and Americans (of all colors) are frozen out of the contingent labor pool in areas where they predominate. Once one of them becomes a tech lead or a project manager, local peer employees get forced out. Their press back home openly brags of a "takeover." There have been more suicides than Kevin Flanagan. Yes, their kids graduate, but their parents will render your degree and your years of experience and professional certifications worthless. They do not think well of us because they were taught that they were brought here on visas to fill a skill and brainpower shortage. They view American white collar workers as inferior and undeserving, and ripe for removal.

    I have worked and lived near many people from India and have always found them to be the most courteous and respectful of American culture. Yes most of them are well educated. India pays for their education and has found by eliminating what we call general education requirements and only requiring classes on their core major subjects have shortened time needed to get a degree.

    Polite? Yes, to your face. There is, however, no reason for hundreds of thousands to be brought here to take white collar jobs that were being done by Americans. Also, many of their degrees are unverifiable, and they do not come burdened by student loan payments, so they can take lower pay which helps the bodyshops place them instead of you. Many of their degrees are the equivalent of our associate degree and certificate programs, but are given names to make them sound better than our degrees. They may call a degree a "Master" of something, implying an equivalency with our graduate school degrees. I happen to know this because I have an American Master's and have looked at their programs. Also, their education is not standardized - a degree from one place might be solid like ours, from another place it might be a piece of paper.

    The big problem is the skill sets. The bodyshops edit their resumes to include whatever is asked for: then they try to learn skills on the job they are already supposed to be experts at. Bodyshop fraud involving H-1B visas is huge:

    Biggest laugh I had in a long time was when a Chinese-American tech group leader complained to me about how the Indian H1-bs were stupid, unqualified, and rude. I think they just bring how they feel about each other in Asia over here.

    Yes, you can sometimes see ethnic and caste differentiation in the workplace. They have their little derogatory nicknames for each other according to where they are from within India. People from Andhra Pradesh get a lot of grief, followed by Gujaratis.
