MORRISVILLE, N.C. — A man who has been living in sanctuary in a Durham church for almost a year was arrested Friday morning after going to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement appointment.
Samuel Oliver-Bruno was seeking deferred deportation after living in the United States for more than 22 years.
Oliver-Bruno’s pastor, Cleve May, was inside the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office with him and said plainclothes ICE agents tackled Oliver-Bruno to the ground.

Last year, the City Well United Methodist Church offered Oliver-Bruno sanctuary, as ICE traditionally has not arrested people inside a church, hospital or school because of its sensitive location policy.

May said Friday that although Oliver-Bruno wasn't in the church at the time of his arrest, he should have still been considered in sanctuary because church members were with him.
Oliver-Bruno’s son, Daniel Oliver-Bruno, was arrested by a Wake County Sheriff’s deputy for allegedly assaulting an ICE agent.
Many people at the USCIS office began singing and praying and said they were willing to be arrested to protect Oliver-Bruno.
