EDINBURG, Texas — U.S. Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley Sector say they have seized more than 7 tons of marijuana in five days.

On Tuesday, agents were working near the Rio Grande when they noticed several people north of the river loading large bundles of marijuana into a Ford Expedition. The smugglers fled, and a helicopter pursued the Expedition for a short distance before the driver abandoned 1,400 pounds of marijuana near Escobares.

On Thursday, agents made another large seizure near Escobares, seizing 900 pounds of abandoned marijuana.

Officials say additional seizures between Sunday and Thursday brought the total marijuana confiscated to more than 14,000 pounds.
