HUNTSVILLE, AL -- Don Spurlin, a Republican candidate for the District 9 seat in the state Senate, announced today he has received an endorsement from Kris Kobach.

Kobach is a Kansas City lawyer and a nationally-renowned immigration expert. He co-authored the controversial Arizona immigration law that has brought the immigration issue to the national forefront.

Kobach is currently a Republican candidate for Secretary of State in Kansas.

District 9 includes south Huntsville, Marshall County and parts of Blount County.

Spurlin, an Albertville businessman, faces Arab farmer Clay Scofield in the July 13 runoff. The winner will face Marshall County Probate Judge Tim Mitchell in the general election.

Both Spurlin and Scofield said in May they supported a law for Alabama immigrants similar to the one passed in Arizona.

"In my travels across the country, I have met thousands of Americans who are concerned about the impact of illegal immigration on our country, but only a small percentage of legislators have Don Spurlin's single-minded devotion and commitment to stopping the problem," Kobach said in the announcement released by Spurlin.

"Don has a common sense plan to reverse the flood of illegal aliens flowing into Alabama while also discouraging those who are already there from staying. I'm proud to stand with him in his efforts."
