DECATUR, AL -- Six suspected illegal immigrants were arrested today during "Operation Community Shield," an enforcement effort targeting adults who allegedly entered the United States without proper documentation and committed crimes here.

The Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Decatur Police Department worked together to arrest Feliciano Gomez, Jose Soto, Jose Carbajal, Margarito Carbajal, Marco Sandoval and Orlando Cruz.

Gomez had been arrested several times in Decatur for theft, trespassing and assault. Soto was arrested a few days ago on a fugitive from justice warrant. Jose Carbajal had been arrested before on drug and assault charges, and Margarito Carbajal had been arrested for burglary.

Of the six suspects arrested today, three will be taken directly to a Birmingham jail and the other three will remain in Decatur awaiting transfer to another facility, according to a statement from Decatur police.
