Alabama - Illegal immigrant charged with enticing a child

RUSSELLVILLE – Police said a local man who is in the country illegally has been arrested after he made inappropriate advances towards a 7-year-old girl.

Police Chief Chris Hargett said Carlos Ramon Leiva, 39, 500 Lauderdale Street, Russellville, has been charged with enticing a child for immoral purposes, and public intoxication.

Investigator Sgt. Jake Tompkins said the incident happened Saturday evening outside a residence on Lauderdale Street.

Tompkins said warrants were issued against Leiva this morning.

“He was taken into custody, then we talked with the district attorney this morning and the decision was made to charge him,” Tompkins said.

Police said Leiva is accused of trying to get the girl to come to him but “he never did anything to her.”

“Someone saw (Leiva) talking with the little girl and called (her) family. They stopped anything from happening,” Tompkins said.

Reports indicate officers responded to the residence on a call of a “possible child abduction,” and when they got there the child’s family had detained Leiva.

Police said it was determined that Leiva was in the country illegally, and immigration officials will be notified.

He is being held in the Russellville City Jail without bond at this time.
