A Hackettstown man, who police suspect may be an illegal immigrant, faces charges after he exposed himself at Alumni Field, police and court records say.

Rafael Santamand, of the 100 block of Main Street, appeared intoxicated and exposed his genitals to a woman Saturday at the Willow Grove Street location, town police said today.

With the help of witnesses, officers found Santamand about 6 p.m. sitting near a pond, police said. Santamand presented officers with a fake social security card and Homeland Security permanent resident card, according to court records.

Hackettstown police Sgt. Darren Tynan said officers believe Santamand is the man's correct name but the residency cards were doctored.

"We have to run him to make sure that's positively who he is but we're pretty sure that's the correct name," he said.

Santamand made his first appearance in state Superior Court today on charges of lewdness and possession of false identification. He was taken to the Warren County jail in lieu of $1,000 bail, records indicate.

Should he post bail, Santamand must be positively identified before he can be released, court records say.

Once his identity is determined, agents from U.S Immigrations and Customs Enforcements would decide whether they would launch an investigation into Santamand's residency status, Tynan said.

If he is found to be illegal, federal authorities could choose to either deport Santamand or allow him to be prosecuted in Warren County on the charges stemming from Saturday's incident, police said.
