Sacramento Coast Guard spots boat with 3 tons of marijuana
A Sacramento-based Coast Guard air crew helped recover 3.3 tons of marijuana from the ocean on Sunday off the coast of Southern California.
The crew of the Coast Guard C-130 Hercules, based in Sacramento, spotted a suspected smuggler's vessel during a routine patrol, according to the Coast Guard. Sailors on the suspected smugglers boat began throwing bales of marijuana overboard and sped south.
The C-130 crew provided the location of the ship, about 90 miles west of San Nicolas Island, to the Coast Guard Cutter Alert. The cutter responded to recover 245 bales of marijuana.
San Nicolas Island is one of the Channel Islands 60 miles off the coast from Los Angeles. Coast Guard crews regularly patrol the waters off the coast to disrupt smuggling of illegal migrants and drugs, according to a Coast Guard press release.
