Immigration Debate Focuses On DWI Fatalities

    POSTED: 6:07 pm EST November 10, 2006
    UPDATED: 9:26 pm EST November 10, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Two fatal crashes in recent weeks involving drivers suspected of being in the country illegally have immigration-reform advocates calling on state lawmakers to take action.

A wreck last Sunday in Durham killed a woman and injured her husband. Carlos Hernandez, a suspected illegal immigrant, has been charged in the case.

On Oct. 27, two North Carolina State University students and a teenager died in a head-on collision near Sanford. Pastor Sanchez, who also is believed to be in the U.S. illegally, has been charged in the case.

"These victims would be alive if our border was secure and our immigration laws were enforced," said William Gheen, president of Americans For Legal Immigration, a political-action committee.

The group has called on the state attorney general's office and state lawmakers to track drunken driving deaths involving illegal immigrants.

A study by the Highway Safety Research Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found Hispanic drivers involved in crashes were three times more likely to be drunk than white or black drivers.

Last year, 18 percent of the 76,000 drunken-driving arrests in North Carolina involved Hispanic drivers. The ethnic group makes up 10 percent of the state's population.

"It's clear across the country -- there's a direct connection between drinking and driving deaths and the illegal alien community," Gheen said. "(We need to) crack down on illegal aliens in this state and do everything we can to prevent these preventable deaths."

Federal legislation has been filed to make driving while intoxicated an automatic deportable offense for illegal immigrants.

El Pueblo, a Hispanic advocacy group, has launched a multimedia education campaign to warn Spanish-speaking drivers of the dangers of drinking and driving. The state Highway Patrol also is participating in the educational program.

Tony Asion, a former police officer who now directs public-safety programs for El Pueblo, said the emotional immigration debate clouds concerns over drunken driving.

"Anytime a Latino does anything that's wrong, it's going to come down on the rest of us," Asion said. "It's not a Latino issue. It's a drunk-driving issue, and that's what we have to deal with."

He said many young Hispanic men turn to alcohol to deal with cultural differences and boredom.

"They're learning how to drive. They're learning how to survive," he said.

    Outstanding W. Gheen -

It is good to see and tell where the problem comes from. Of course we have the disguting invader El Pueblo Group aiding and abetting their illegal invasion. There is a direct connection between lawlessness DUI's and illegal immigration. I have personally been in an e-mail discussion/fight with Tony Asion and of course he needs to go back to Mexico if he is so concerned and wants to help illegal Aliens rather than being a lieing theif in the United States.

It is a shame once again to see the cost that our Federal Government thinks nothing of in its failure to abide the U.S. Constitution and current Federal immigration laws.

Illegal Aliens need to GO and they need to leave North Carolina NOW!

It's not a "Latino issue" or "drunk driving issue," it's an illegal immigrant issue!

Is it any wonder that NC has a problem with drunk driving illegal immigrants? I think not, Rep. David Price (D-NC) is an illegal aliens best friend:

    - Voted against bill to increase interior enforcement in 2006.

    - Voted against border fence in 2006.

    - Voted for sanctuary policies for illegal aliens in 2006.

    - Voted on floor of the House against final passage of border security and enforcement bill in 2005.

    - Voted on the floor of the House against amendment to require implementation of entry-exit system in 2005.

    - Voted on House floor against amendment to clarify local law enforcement's authority to enforce immigration laws in 2005.

    - Voted on House floor against amendment to increase security with border fence in 2005.

    - Voted in favor of sanctuary policies for illegal aliens in 2005.

    - Voted in favor of sanctuary policies for illegal aliens in 2005.

    - Voted against amendment to increase interior enforcement in 2005.

    - Voted against authorizing the use of the military to assist in border control functions in 2005.

-Voted against bill to bar drivers' licenses for illegal aliens in 2005.

With people like Rep. David Price pushing his agenda, the problem will continue. It was a sorry state of affairs when he was re-elected to the U.S. Congress on Nov. 7th!

What's really sad is it's innocent people that are being murdered on our highways by drunk illegals. If one of those children killed had been the child of this illegal advocate, how would he feel?

Every death at the hands of an illegal alien is preventable.

"Anytime a Latino does anything that's wrong, it's going to come down on the rest of us," Asion said. "It's not a Latino issue. It's a drunk-driving issue, and that's what we have to deal with."
Could it be because advocates such as Asion keep defending illegals no matter what mayhem they cause?

He said many young Hispanic men turn to alcohol to deal with cultural differences and boredom.

"They're learning how to drive. They're learning how to survive," he said.
Mr. Asion these people should NOT be allowed to stay in this country much less be "learning how to drive........learning how to survive." Advise them to go home to drive/survive.
