Green Bay council set to vote on immigration ordinance

    Press-Gazette

The Green Bay City Council is set to vote on a proposed immigration ordinance at 7 p.m. tonight at City Hall, Room 203.

The proposed ordinance would require anyone obtaining a license or permit from the city to promise to adhere to federal immigration laws.

If passed, the ordinance wouldn’t go into effect until it's published in the city's official newspaper of record, the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

For more on the proposed ordinance, check www.greenbaypressgazette.com and read Wednesday’s Press-Gazette.

Green Bay passes ordinance against hiring illegals

    Associated Press - June 20, 2007 12:45 AM ET

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Any business hiring illegal immigrants could have its licenses, contracts and other grants from the city taken away under an ordinance passed tonight.

The ordinance was approved, 9 to 2, by the City Council and is due to take effect this weekend after the official notice is published.

Opponents contend the proposal would be unenforceable, inhumane and mean-spirited and would only add to the area's labor shortage.

But advocates say businesses that hire illegals should be punished.
