Students at UC Irvine vote to ban American flag

    By Todd Starnes

Students at the University of California, Irvine have voted to make their school a more “culturally inclusive” place by banning the American flag.

The Associated Students of University of California (ASUCI) passed a resolution March 3 that would remove the Stars & Stripes along with every other flag from the lobby of a complex housing the offices of the student government.

“Designing a culturally inclusive space aims to remove barriers that create undue effort and separation by planning and designing spaces that enable everyone to participate equally and confidentially,” read the resolution authored by Matthew Guevara.

The resolution passed 6-4. Two people abstained. Let me break down the vote for you -- six unAmerican students, four patriots and two individuals who could have a career in House Republican leadership.

Guevara’s resolution, which was in dire need of an edit, rambled on about “paradigms of conformity” and “homogenized standards” and blah, blah, blah.

It sounds like Mr. Guevara could have a future career in community organizing or the Democratic party.
“The American flag has been flown in instances of colonialism and imperialism,” he bemoaned. “Flags not only serve as symbols of patriotism or weapons for nationalism, but also construct cultural mythologies and narratives that in turn charge nationalistic sentiments.”
I know, folks. I know it’s California. But this is beyond bizarre even for the yoga and granola crowd.

I reached out to the university for a comment and a very nice spokesperson (who seemed anxious for the weekend) assured me the university did not endorse the resolution. She also told me the executive board of the student government association is going to meet this weekend and discuss the possibility of a veto.

Reza Zomorrodian, the ASUCI president and a young patriot, told me he was very upset over the student government’s actions and will push for a veto.

“It’s an attack on American values,” he said. “A lot of people want to come to the United States for a reason – it’s because of the freedoms we have.”

Zomorrodian told me the legislation was the result of a longstanding feud over the display of the American flag. He said unknown perpetrators kept taking down the flag and he would put it back up. The flag is currently folded and being protected in a vice president’s office.
“I’m really disappointed in our legislative council right now,” he said. “I’m firmly against what they did. I think it was a horrible idea.”
Zomorrodian said he wants the American public to know that UC Irvine is a patriotic campus.

“Only six people voted for this,” he said. “We have 22,000 undergrads here. Six people made this decision. The UC Irvine has made huge contributions to bettering this country. This is an elected body that made a decision for the whole and will suffer the consequences of making that decision.”

Mr. Zomorrodian sounds like a very nice young man who understands what the American flag represents --- and I hope he musters the votes necessary to rehoist the Stars & Stripes.

As for the handful of un-American rabblerousers who’ve brought shame upon the campus of UC Irvine – I would offer these gentle words:
If you have a problem with the flag and what that flag stands for and the brave men and women who died for that flag – then you are more than welcome to pack your bags and haul your ungrateful buttocks across the border.

And one final thought about the vandals who keep taking down the flag in the dark of night. I wonder if Mr. Zomorrodian has considered asking the university’s ROTC program for help. I suspect a handful of young soldiers might be able to nip that problem in the bud.

Illegal aliens need to be banned from American colleges and universities. It should be a crime to aid and abet students who are in the country illegally which means admissions to college, housing in college, scholarships to college, financial aid, all activities of college are aiding and abetting illegal aliens who are admitted to these schools. In fact, I believe it already is a crime under US immigration law, and it's a crime to take their money, because it's illegal money. Depriving an American student a seat because it was filled by an illegal alien should be a crime. In fact, I believe it already is a crime under US immigration law, because the whole premise of US immigration law is to prevent illegal aliens from entering the US and taking from American citizens, whether it's a job or a seat in college.

For colleges and universities and members of state legislatures not to understand the clear and present harm and the as-obvious-as-the-nose-on-your-face illegality of allowing foreign students into their state colleges and universities is unbelievable incompetence with regard to our laws and the purpose for them, so much so that one can only conclude that these institutions are complicit in the crime of illegal immigration by aiding, abetting and yes even harboring them in student dormitories.

It's time to enforce the law to the letter and verse including its premise and purpose, and hold all these traitors accountable under the criminal law and oh yes civil law for all the lives you've ruined or greatly diminished for selling Americans seats in college to illegal aliens.

Breaking news: UCI panel vetoes ban on American flag

    March 7, 2015

IRVINE – A UC Irvine panel on Saturday vetoed a student council vote to ban the American flag from the council lobby.

The Associated Students - University of California Irvine's executive cabinet voted for the veto in a private meeting.

    The vote was 4-1.

The flag ban was approved 6-4 (with two people abstaining) on Thursday by the Associated Students’ Legislative Council. It banned the U.S. flag and all other nations' flags from the common lobby area of student council offices. Council members said that promoted “inclusivness.”

News of the ban rapidly made its way around social media and received national attention. Late Friday, Sacramento weighed in.

State Senators Janet Nguyen and Pat Bates, along with Assemblyman Don Wagner and ot her state leaders, announced they were considering introducing a Senate constitutional amendment on Monday to prevent state universities from banning the flag.

The resolution to ban the flag, authored by student Matthew Guevara, said that flags can serve as "weapons for nationalism" and that the American flag had been "flown in instances of colonialism and imperialism."

Guevara, the council representative from the School of Social Ecology and the Advocacy Committee vice-chair, wrote further that the intent was to design " a culturally inclusive space," remove barriers and "allow everyone to participate equally and confidently."

Student council President Reza Zomorrodian said he opposed the flag ban.

“I stand firmly against this piece of legislation, though I understand the authors intent and supporters intent,” he said in a statement on the UCI News website. “I disagree with the solution the council has come to.”

Modeled after the federal system of government, the ASUCI executive cabinet has the power to veto decisions made by the legislative council. If vetoed, the legislative council has to approve the measure with a two-thirds majority to override the veto.

Well, good for the Executive Council. Now we'll see if one of 2 abstainees will step up and vote against the ban or vote with the majority to reach the 2/3 veto power. At some point, the grown ups will need to get involved unless this is some type of private property, which it may be. Who knows these days who is actually paying for what.

    LATEST UPDATE

Breaking news: UCI panel vetoes ban on American flag

    March 7, 2015

    Updated 5:33 p.m.
BY KELLY ZHOU / STAFF WRITER

    KELLY ZHOU

IRVINE – A UC Irvine student panel on Saturday vetoed a student council vote to ban the American flag from the council lobby.

The executive cabinet of UCI's Associated Students decided the flag should remain on display. The panel vetoed the prohibition in a private meeting.

    The vote was 4-1.

The flag ban was approved 6-4 on Thursday by the Associated Students’ Legislative Council. It banned the U.S. flag and all other nations' flags from the common lobby area of student council offices.

Council members said that promoted “inclusiveness.” Two people abstained.

On Saturday, Reza Zomorrodian, student council president and chair of the executive cabinet, said the five-member panel had a frank discussion about values and the importance of protecting freedom of speech - in other words, allowing people to put up flags.

He added that while people may be upset with policies by the American government, the flag is nonpartisan.

"We see the flag as transcending policy and politics, it represents American values," he said following the veto. "We disagree with the legislative council, they see it as a representation of policy."

News of the ban had rapidly made its way around social media and received national attention. Late Friday, Sacramento weighed in.

State Senators Janet Nguyen and Pat Bates, along with Assemblyman Don Wagner and other state leaders, announced they were considering introducing a Senate constitutional amendment on Monday to prevent state universities from banning the flag.

Late Saturday afternoon, Nguyen applauded the veto, but said she planned to move forward with the constitutional amendment.

"I want to ensure this won't happen again," she said.

Modeled after the federal system of government, the ASUCI executive cabinet has the power to veto decisions made by the legislative council. If vetoed, the legislative council has to approve the measure with a two-thirds majority to override the veto.

Some students who were on campus on a quiet Saturday afternoon said they hadn't yet heard about the flag issue, while others were largely against the ban and said the issue had been blown out of proportion.

Angelica Honda, a fifth-year psychology and social behavior/public health student, said she had seen discussion of the issue on Facebook, and many people had put up profile pictures with the American flag.

"It's good to listen to all different countries and cultures," Honda said when asked about the ban's effort at inclusivity. "We should just allow all flags to be displayed, rather than excluding flags."

The Legislative Council meets on Tuesday and could choose to override the veto with a two-thirds vote. But even if the measure is passed, it will still go to the Judicial Board, which will consider whether or not it infringes on freedom of speech and other rights, Zomorrodian said.

He said he did not expect the Legislative Council to override the veto, considering the "loud and clear" message from campus and Executive Cabinet.

Guevara did not respond to emailed questions Saturday afternoon.

This example of control that will be universally applied once a majority of the nation are aliens or descendants of them. Prepare your grandchildren for what was allowed by the boomer generation to happen to the USA. Generations prior to that one exercised immigration control quite well compared to the past several decades under boomer control.

Any school that refuses or would refuse to display the USA flag should immediately be removed from qualifying for American taxpayer funds of any type, including grants and student loans!!
