Educating the children of illegals

The debate over whether illegal immigrants should be allowed to attend North Carolina’s community colleges has gotten pretty lively, and at times ugly, in the couple weeks since officials within the college system issued a memo saying that such persons could attend class, albeit at out-of-state tuition rates.
We agree with the decision. The children of such immigrants should be allowed to attend community colleges.
Most people agree that America’s current immigration policy isn’t working. And there doesn’t seem to be a consensus on how to fix it.
This is a problem that the federal government needs to address. However neither President Bush nor those in Congress have exerted the leadership needed to resolve the issue.
The Republicans were unable to do it when they had majorities in both chambers of Congress. Democrats, thus far, have shown that they’re no better at dealing with the issue.
We have always been a nation of immigrants. The Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor serves not only as a reminder of how immigrants have built this nation, but also as a symbol of hope to those who see it.
The fact that many immigrants today are entering our country through our southern borders rather than New York Harbor shouldn’t dilute that symbol of hope.
For the United States to continue having anti-immigration policies is, well, un-American.
The state’s community colleges are the de-facto institution in North Carolina for many people to receive a basic education or specialized training.
While we’d like to see the private sector step up and take a greater role here, reality tells us that for the foreseeable future, this function will be handled by community
colleges.
Children of illegal immigrants, many of whom had no say in the decision that their parents made to migrate to the United States and North Carolina, are likely to remain here, whether we like it or not. Community colleges are one place where they can get training and therefore become productive residents.
Under the current scenario, allowing them to attend community colleges will not be a drain on taxpayers since they are charged out-of-state tuition rates. Those out-of-state rates are charged to them even though they live in North Carolina and many of their family members are working here and having state income taxes withheld from their paychecks and paying sales taxes every time they purchase goods at retail stores.
The policy of allowing such immigrants to attend community colleges appears to be one of reason. It’s one that will help provide skills to a segment of our population that will likely be an important part of our future work force.

Two wrongs can't make a right
It is against the law to profit from the commission of a crime, just ask O.J. Simpson where the profits from his book went, by the same reasoning two illegals can NOT result in a LEGAL citizen, they negated the possibility of legality when they crossed the border and broke the law, therefore their children are also illegal. The probability is they stuck the hospital and legitimate U.S. Citizens with the bill, felony fraud, we do not need or want to import criminals, we have plenty of our own, we call them politicians.
It is time the government stop selectively enforcing laws and start enforcing ALL of our laws, even against invaders instead of just citizens, how about before we amnesty aliens how about we release the thousand of legitimate U.S. Citizens in our jails and prisons for committing the same crimes the invaders commit to be here, such as breaking and entering, trespassing, identity theft, using false identification, defrauding hospitals, governments and taxpayers of billions of dollars intended for legitimate citizens. Think how much money we could save if we amnesty English speaking felons instead of dragging down our culture and educational system filling it with non-English speaking illegal criminals.
