Anti-Illegal Immigration Radio Hosts Head for Washington

(CNSNews.com) - More than 30 talk radio hosts and hundreds of their listeners are scheduled to converge on the nation's capital next week to lobby against comprehensive immigration reform measures that would offer what critics views as "amnesty" to illegal immigrants.

The conservative Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and San Diego radio talk show host Roger Hedgecock are sponsoring a marathon of talk radio and Capitol Hill lobbying, dubbed "Hold Their Feet to the Fire 2007."

The four-day event will kick off on Sunday, April 22, with a rally near the White House. From Monday through Wednesday, 36 radio hosts will broadcast from the Phoenix Park Hotel near the U.S. Capitol while an estimated 700 volunteers will visit elected officials and urge them to oppose what they consider to be "amnesty."

The schedule also includes a fundraiser dinner featuring U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, a staunch opponent of guest worker programs and a long-shot contender for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.

U.S. Reps. Brian Bilbray and Dana Rohrabacher are also scheduled to address the dinner, which will benefit the families of two border patrol agents in prison for shooting a Mexican drug smuggler.

Event manager Bob Dane called the marathon a "unique gathering of radio talk show hosts, all representing the views of millions of their listeners." He said it gives opponents of illegal immigration a chance "to make known the views of millions of Americans who oppose Big Business's reliance on cheap labor."

"If you want to cut to the core of FAIR's mission, it is the preservation of the middle class right now, which is threatened by a seemingly endless supply of cheap labor," Dane told Cybercast News Service. "[Immigration] burdens us and our children and future generations to come with the cost of health care, education and welfare."

In a statement announcing the event, FAIR President Dan Stein said his group "represents the views of the vast majority of Americans" who "are not the type of people who take the streets for mass protests."

"But," Stein added, "they are the type of people who vote, and this is one of a handful of issues that will determine who they vote for or against."

Douglas Rivlin, a spokesman for the pro-immigration National Immigration Forum, told Cybercast News Service that FAIR represents a "very vocal but not very large minority who are pushing a hard line."

"There's about 25 percent of the country that's in agreement with FAIR, and they've been able -- through talk radio and through a well-financed and well-networked campaign -- to make themselves appear much larger than they are," he said. "Public opinion has turned decisively against them."

While Stein said his group represents the views of the majority, recent polling suggests that most Americans support a guest worker program that would allow illegal immigrants to remain in the U.S. if they meet certain requirements.

In a Los Angeles Times poll conducted in early April, 55 percent of respondents said they favor comprehensive immigration reform including "a guest worker program that allows undocumented workers to work legally in the U.S. on temporary visas." Forty percent favored only tougher enforcement measures.

More than three-quarters of respondents said they want the government to punish employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

A March New York Times/CBS News poll found that 59 percent of Americans believe "illegal immigrants who have lived in the United States for at least two years" should be "given a chance to keep their jobs and eventually apply for legal status."

President Bush's comprehensive immigration plan includes five major proposals: securing the border, employer accountability, assimilation assistance, a temporary worker program and a plan to allow illegal residents to pay a "meaningful penalty" to remain in the country.

In documents stressing its support for the reform package, the White House says that "all elements of this issue must be addresses together -- or none of them will be solved at all."

Rivlin said that with Democrats in control of Congress and a president who supports comprehensive reform, FAIR is "going to need to pull out all the stops this year if they are going to prevent a reform from happening."

"It's still got a long way to go from this day to a bill actually being signed by the president," he said. "But all of the pieces of an engaged reform debate this year leading to bipartisan legislation seem to be in place."

IMHO I think it may very well be time that we take to the streets. That may very well be all these dimwits in Washington understand, huge crowds of angry Americans venting their support of anti-illegal immigration measures and strongly opposing any form of amnesty.

We need one of the bigger groups in our movement to tackle these bogus polls they are putting out about guest worker.

Our resources are stretched to the point we can't take the lead on that. We can certainly circulate and distribute rebuttals and deconstruction of these bogus polls though.

Well, this article isn't slanted is it?

More than 30 talk radio hosts and hundreds of their listeners..
Heard there were now around 40 radio hosts.

"There's about 25 percent of the country that's in agreement with FAIR...
    I seriously doubt this stat.

In a Los Angeles Times poll conducted in early April, 55 percent of respondents said they favor comprehensive immigration reform including "a guest worker program...
A poll in LA? Being LA I'm surprised that % isn't higher. Who cares about a poll in LA of all places?

A March New York Times/CBS News poll found that 59 percent of Americans believe "illegal immigrants who have lived in the United States for at least two years" should be "given a chance to keep their jobs and eventually apply for legal status."
Another highly questionable poll for sure.
