Anti-immigration group sets rally to unveil billboards

    October 28, 2006

Members of Oregonians for Immigration Reform will hold a rally on the steps of the Capitol on Monday.

During the gathering, the group will inaugurate the first of three billboards spotlighting illegal immigration.

"For years, the governor and state agencies have been proactive in trying to lure illegal aliens into the state by providing driver licenses and state services to them," said Jim Ludwick, OFIR's president. "Oregon is the only state on the West Coast that openly acknowledges that it issues driver licenses to illegal aliens, making us a magnet for ID theft, the methamphetamine trade and illegal immigration."

In the state's network of anti-illegal-immigrant activists, few have been as vocal OFIR.

The 800-member group has been tackling illegal immigration since it was established in 2000. Its goal is to make it impossible for politicians to ignore the issue.

"The governor and state agencies ignore the negative impacts of tens of thousands of illegal aliens on public education, the Oregon Health Plan and the criminal justice system," said Rick Hickey, OFIR's vice president.

Incensed by the hundreds of thousands of protesters nationwide who turned out this spring to support migrant workers, OFIR devised new tactics. Group officials said those include their billboard project to drive undocumented immigrants out of Oregon.

Scheduled to join the demonstrators are Mike Erickson, the Republican challenger in the Fifth Congressional District, and Constitution Party gubernatorial candidate Mary Starrett.

Other speakers expected to take part in the rally include state Reps. Kim Thatcher, R-Keizer, Linda Flores, R-Clackamas, Jeff Kropf, R-Sublimity, and several candidates seeking office.

Conservative talk show host, Lars Larson, is expected to do a remote broadcast of the rally.

Ahem. Excuse me, Ms. Guererro? You made a typo. It's anti-illegal alien group, since legitimate immigration is not objected to. You've been hanging out with John McCain, haven't you!

What part of "We don't owe our jobs to India" are you unable to understand, Senator?

Heard an analyst on talk radio say that a Republican might win as governor in OR for the first time in forever. Is he anti-illegal alien?

If you have time, you really should leave a comment on the newspaper's website.
