300 to 1,000 from Central America Expected to Seek Asylum in US

Group from Central America Expected to Seek Asylum in US

    Posted: May 2, 2014 11:39 AM

HIDALGO - Officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge have called for backup. This is after learning a large group of immigrants from Central America was going to attempt to seek political asylum in the U.S.

We're told extra Border Patrol agents, McAllen police, Hidalgo police and Hidalgo County's sheriff deputies are at the bridge right now.

CBP Supervisor and Public Affairs Liaison Phil Barrera said the Central American group, which numbers anywhere from 300 to possibly 1,000, is now in Reynosa. We're told the group made a stop at religious shelter at this hour. There's no word about when they plan to cross into the U.S.

Operations at the Hidalgo International Bridge are running normally at this hour. CHANNEL 5 NEWS has a crew at the bridge. We'll stay on top of this story and bring you the very latest details.

HIDALGO — A protest in Reynosa by human rights activists led to a buildup of agents and law enforcement officers at this city’s international bridge.

On Friday morning more than 80 law enforcement officials arrived at the Reynosa-Hidalgo International Bridge to step up the areas security.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers as well as over a dozen Hidalgo Police officers kept a close watch on the southbound lanes of the bridge.

On the northbound lanes, U.S. Border Patrol agents, Texas Rangers, Texas State Troopers, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Deputies and other agencies assisted CBP officers in keeping watch on the vehicles and pedestrians coming north.

A Tamaulipas law enforcement official said that a group of Central and South American protesters had been at a mass in Reynosa, however he had not heard of any intent to cross into the U.S. side.

CBP officers had received information about a large group of individuals that could possibly try to come across the bridge, however shortly afternoon, the area appeared relatively calm, said agency spokesman Phil Barrera.

Reynosa has been the scene of a series of firefights during an internal struggle between members of organized crime as well as with Mexican authorities that has left an official death toll of 17 dead including two bystanders and two federal police officers, Mexican authorities confirmed.

They treat Americans with contempt, because in their eyes we are weaklings who deserve contempt. Their governments would never stand for a wholesale undercutting of their own people. The American government however, seems to actually want them to undercut Americans; so they do.
