President Barack Obama has agreed to meet Thursday with Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer in Washington, a White House official confirmed to The Arizona Republic.

Brewer, a Republican who on April 23 signed Arizona's controversial immigration law over Obama's publicly expressed misgivings, requested a meeting with the president on border issues. She will be in Washington on other business. The White House was able to find a spot on the president's schedule.

The immigration law is under the scrutiny of Obama's Justice Department, which is considering suing the state. For her part, Brewer has taken some pointed political shots at Obama and other administration officials in connection with the topic.

Brewer left for Washington on Tuesday and had planned to spend today in Washington before returning to Arizona on Thursday, her spokesman, Paul Senseman, said. He was not aware that Obama had agreed to meet Brewer but said he understood that a meeting was possible.

Earlier this year, Obama appointed Brewer to a bipartisan 10-governor council created to share information and give advice to the federal government on homeland-defense issues. Brewer went to Washington for a preliminary planning session with the other governors.
