Judge dismisses charges against immigration agent

A federal judge has dismissed criminal charges against an immigration agent who ran a stop sign three years ago while on duty in San Diego County, killing three women.

A federal judge has dismissed criminal charges against an immigration agent who ran a stop sign three years ago while on duty in San Diego County, killing three women.

U-T San Diego ( Charges against ICE agent dismissed | UTSanDiego.com) says the judge ruled Thursday that federal law enforcement officers accused of crimes while on-duty have immunity from prosecution under federal law. Cole Dotson had been charged with three counts of gross vehicular manslaughter.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Dotson was driving his government car at speeds over 100 mph while following a suspected methamphetamine smuggler when he slammed into a van driven by 41-year-old Sandra Garcia. Garcia and two passengers were killed and two children were injured.

A prosecutor says a decision on whether to appeal the decision will be made later.
