Arpaio unit arrests 20 suspected undocumented immigrants

Twenty suspected undocumented immigrants were arrested Wednesday after two vehicles were pulled over on two Arizona highways for alleged speeding, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

At about 2 p.m., a smuggling unit pulled over a van with 12 people inside on Arizona 87 near Bush Highway. Several passengers admitted to being smuggled into the United States, Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

Shortly thereafter, the same unit stopped an SUV on Interstate 17 near New River and found eight more suspected illegal immigrants
, one of whom was hiding in the vehicle, Arpaio said.

All 20 are in custody and could face state felony charges, Arpaio added.
