The arrest of a pizza delivery man picked up by ICE agents at a Brooklyn military base has revved up calls for the state to allow undocumented immigrants to receive driver’s licenses.

Twelve states plus the District of Columbia make it possible for undocumented immigrants to hold driver’s licenses regardless of their status.
But New York, despite past efforts, remains on the list of states that leave non-citizens out in the cold.
Gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon urged Gov. Cuomo to take action following the detention of pizzaman Pablo Villavicencio, who was taken into custody while trying to deliver a pie to the Fort Hamilton Army Base.

"Governor Cuomo must immediately issue an executive order granting access to driver’s licenses for all New Yorkers,” Nixon said.

“Until Cuomo stops dragging his feet, there will only be more tragic stories like Pablo’s.”

Cuomo reps said he has long supported providing driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants. But they said history proves that trying to push through such a plan via executive order is doomed to fail.

Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer was forced to back away from his proposal in 2007 amid the threat of legal challenges and the opposition of upstate county clerks vowing to ignore a potential order.

The issue is particularly thorny in New York since county clerks run most of the state’s DMV offices.

Just last month, Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns said he won’t budge even if the Legislature passes a bill currently in committee in Albany that would allow undocumented immigrants to get a state license.

The bill, known as the Driver License Access and Privacy Act, would allow them to apply for a license using foreign passports and a signed affidavit saying they don’t have a Social Security number.

“I cannot in good conscience follow through on a policy that would violate federal laws by knowingly providing government identification to people here illegally,” Kearns said in May.

Villavicencio, a married Long Island father with two daughters, was arrested after a Fort Hamilton guard ran a background check that revealed an active ICE warrant.

The guard had refused to let the Ecuadorian immigrant onto the base with only a city-issued IDNYC card.

Villavicencio’s wife Sandra Chica, who is an American citizen, acknowledged that he was driving without a valid license.

“He only had a city-issued ID. That’s what did him. That told the other guy that he was undocumented,” Chica told the Daily News.

“Yes, he drove, but only for work. He said that God was with him. He said that he couldn't just stay home. He had to go to work and support his daughters.”

Jeff Sessions needs to look into this practice of States aiding and abetting illegal aliens by granting them government issued Driver's Licenses! They need to be deemed Null & Void. They directly go against our Federal Immigration Laws.

These people are in our country ILLEGALLY and should receive NO government issued licenses of ANY kind, nor should they receive ANY taxpayer funded benefits of any kind including school and medical.

STOP THE STATES AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HARBORING, AIDING AND ABETTING ILLEGAL ALIENS BY AWARDING THEM OUR COUNTIES BENEFITS! THEY ARE NOT CITIZENS AND THEY QUALIFY TO RECIEVE NOTHING BUT IMMEDIATE DEPORTATION!

The pizza joint should be prosecuted for hiring a delivery driver with no actual driver's license! How does this happen? The first thing a company should do when hiring a driver is make sure the driver has a valid driver's license. I suspect the pizza joint knew full well this guy was here illegally. Besides that, don't see what the big fuss is over because he is already under a deportation order!

Not only that...I am sure he was driving for this company WITHOUT proper auto insurance!

GET THEM OFF OUR ROADS AND OUT OF OUR COUNTRY!
