ABC 7's Project Immigration revealed that more immigrants are warning family members not to come to the U.S. because of the sagging economy.

Along a rural road in western El Salvador, ABC 7's Andrea McCarren spotted a young boy in a red shirt harvesting sugar cane. His name was Jonathan and he was 12-years-old. Like most children his age, Jonathan had a dream, a dream to travel to the United States and work.

For many Central Americans, the dream to work in the U.S. is fading quick.

"What I want to say to all the people from El Salvador or other countries, the situation in this country is not easy. It's very difficult and it's not worth it to risk your life," said day laborer Jose Manuel Munoz through a translator.

From suburban Washington to rural El Salvador, ABC 7 heard from many immigrants that they are warning their friends and relatives to not come to America. "I say to the rest, this is not a good time to come to the United States. If you are okay, over there, in El Salvador, stay there," said Rosa Nativi.

Carlos Diaz' sister lives in Manassas. "She has told me that a lot of people is afraid to get out of their houses, to walk in the streets, because they're getting caught by immigration department and they're getting deported," he said through a translator.

"If somebody pays me one million dollars, I will never do it again. Not ever," Diaz said.

The 57-year-old day laborer left his hometown of Ilopango, El Salvador and turned to a coyote, or human smuggler, for help. He was desperate to reunite with his wife of more than 30 years who was already in Maryland, working as a housekeeper.

"I paid $7,500 and after this moment, I don't think I have earned that money in the three years I have been here," he said.

His illegal journey to the U.S. lasted a month and nearly cost him his life. "The most terrible thing is you don't know if you're going to make it," Diaz said, "It's really hard to talk about the way they treat me."

In the end, with a mangled leg, he was literally carried across the border. "We come here looking for a dignified job, looking to pay taxes, and I think that's not a crime."

For now, he sits and waits for work that rarely comes. Like many day laborers, Carlos wants to go home. "The very first moment that my wife says let's go back, we will go back."

Federal law actually allows illegal immigrants to leave the U.S. voluntarily but it must be at their own expense.

Maybe we should set up a fund to help these poor unfortunate leaches to buy bus or plane tickets back to where they came from.

On second thought let them walk or swim back.

Actually, you may have hit on an idea there.

Look, it's costing us far more to keep these people here than it would to send them back home if they want to go, not to mention the costs of detaining and deporting them if they are caught, right?

If our government would use one of the few brain cells still functioning, it would make sense to offer a program whereby those illegals wishing to return home voluntarily would be sent home. They could be required to submit to data collection...fingerprinting, DNA, etc.......and sign agreements willing to accept certain penalties if they ever return illegally, but on the other hand, they could also be offered incntives if they ever decide to try to immigrate legally...something like reduced fees, not anything that would put them in line ahead of others.

It really would be a cost effective, win-win for everyone involved and I think we might be surprised just how many actually do want to go home but have found themselves stuck.

I really think it's time to insert a condition on the free Foreign Aid money we are sending these 3rd world countries: PART OF THIS MONEY MUST BE USED FOR TV, RADIO, AND PRINT ADS TELLING YOUR PEOPLE NOT TO COME HERE. They can use real SOB stories and testimonials of deported and still-to-be-deported aliens.

As long as this is working to discourage illegals from invading and encouraging others to want to leave, the tougher for them here, the better. Now if we can only make it that way for traitorous politicians.

What an excellent way to advertise. Wouldn't it be wonderful if they constantly aired this message in foreign countries during television and radio breaks. Maybe they would listen if the words came out of the mouths of their own people.

Even if there was work here...is it EVER worth it to risk your life just for a job??? I think not...

The biggest risk seems to be crossing the boarder from El Salvador into Mexico. For some strange reason the Mexican government has no problem using extreme force protecting their southern broader but decry the United States wanting to protect ours.

As for the fund to send Carlos back home... I'll chip in .
Of course if ICE would check some of the labor places Carlos could get a free ride home.

If his wife is here illegally and they are found... her employer should have to buy the bus ticket!
