Border Patrol arrests murder suspect, international fugitive

SALTON CITY — Border Patrol agents snagged two big arrests over the weekend, one a murder suspect from the Los Angeles area and another wanted by international authorities for alleged drug trafficking.
The first arrest occurred Friday evening at the Highway 86 checkpoint after agents pulled an individual into the secondary inspection area and, while performing a records check, showed that Adrian Medina Lopez, 19, had a $10 million outstanding warrant out of Los Angeles on suspicion of murder.
Lopez was turned over to the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office and extradited to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, according to a press release from the Border Patrol. The name of the individual was not released by Border Patrol, but found in Sheriff’s Office arrest logs.
In a separate incident Saturday evening, Border Patrol agents assigned to the Calexico station apprehended a Romanian national with an outstanding Interpol warrant for narcotics trafficking.
The Romanian national was arrested with a group of eight Romanians who attempted to illegally enter the United States, according to the press release. Record checks revealed that the suspect, a 31-year-old man, is wanted by Italian authorities on suspicion of drug trafficking.
Through coordinated efforts, Border Patrol agents and Washington, D.C., Interpol authorities confirmed the warrant of the wanted suspect. The Border Patrol turned over custody of the suspect to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement for extradition proceedings to Italian authorities.
El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents have arrested 1,167 individuals with outstanding warrants since October.
