WHO DESERVES TO WORK? LET THE FREE MARKET RULE

December 27, 2006 -- THE ISSUE: The immigration debate and the role of illegals in a competitive job market.

Many thanks for your outspoken editorial, "Jobs Who Won't Do?" (Dec. 22). This fallacy - that illegal aliens "do jobs Americans won't do" - has been bugging me for years.

It is totally untrue and it is sad that no one has pointed it out or stood up for Americans until now.

An old saying comes to mind: If a lie is told often enough, it becomes the truth. That is exactly what this cliché has become.

Massive, mind-blowing illegal immigration is a dagger aimed at the heart of U.S. citizenship, sovereignty and the rule of law.

Replacing American workers with cheap labor is a key goal of President Bush. His contention that Americans won't do the jobs is pure nonsense.

Let the free market work; wages will rise to the level necessary to attract Americans to do these jobs.

There are many issues regarding illegal immigration that politicians will never recognize, but the most immediate and troubling is the threat to national security that is being created by this sea of illegal aliens.

With their identities unknown, illegal aliens can "hide" in plain sight until given direction to do grievous harm in the form of another 9/11 attack.

Until we know everyone's true identity and secure our borders, we will forever be vulnerable. Our safety and our nation's security must take precedence over corporate profit.

The statement "Yes, most poor immigrants - legal or otherwise - will work hard when they arrive in this country" misses one important point. Many of those immigrants change their work ethic and wage expectations as soon as they learn about labor laws, unions and other means of protection that working Americans have at their disposal.

Many of them will eventually discover the doctrine "no taxation without representation," take it out of context and interpret it to mean that anybody who comes to work in the United States should be entitled to elect the government of his or her liking.

I have always believed that the government should look realistically at what jobs are availible and if there truly is a job shortage to determine who can immigrate here. There are many doctors that come here from Canada and they are welcomed as their education and practical experience is the same and they speak English. They need to write the MD exam and if they pass they can work. Doctors are needed big time as the baby boomers get older. There is also a shortage of registered nurses by that I mean real nurses who have degrees and not healthcare aids who only take a few courses and do minimal patient care. Now we have more Americans studying nursing but more are needed. If we have women with degrees who speak English and pass the RN exam in a state where they have a job lined up then they should also be able to get their papers. Same thing with those who have needed skills in certain industries such as electronic sattelite navigation systems on boats for example. In situations like that those people should be allowed to come and work here as they are truly needed. As soon as there are enough Americans trained and able to do those jobs then no more immigrants should be allowed to get those jobs. This is only fair to all concerned.
