Attempted murder suspects arrested at Mexican Border

The Washoe County sheriff's office says two suspects in the beating of a Reno man near Pyramid Lake arrested on April 8, 2008, at approximately 11:30 pm have been arrested at the Mexican border Tuesday night as they attempted to re-enter the United States from Mexico.

The two suspects, Richard Daniel Ortiz, 21, and Ivan Dejesus Canedo, 25, were stopped and arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers based on information provided by Washoe County Sheriff's Detectives. They are currently being held in San Diego County jail.

Arrest warrants had been issued for Ortiz and Canedo for attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon, battery with intent to kill and conspiracy.

The crime allegedly occurred April 1, 2008, at approximately 9:00 pm. Ortiz and Canedo were said to have driven their victim to a remote area near Pyramid Lake to attend a "get together".

The two pretended their vehicle had a flat tire luring their 35-year-old victim out of the car at a remote area near Pyramid Lake where they attacked him, beating him up with weapons including a baton before driving away and leaving the victim behind.

After an estimated two hours, Ortiz and Canedo allegedly returned with a third accomplice and using a baseball bat, once again, took turns battering the victim. They suspects then left the victim on the roadside unable to walk on his own.

A passerby found the victim the following morning and alerted authorities who transported him to Renown Medical Center with life threatening injuries.

Washoe County Sheriff's Detectives are currently en route to San Diego to continue their investigation and assist with extradition proceedings. Attempts are being made to identify and locate the third suspect.
