ALBANY — State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is the latest high-profile official to call for the DREAM Act to be included in the upcoming state budget.
Supporters of the DREAM Act, which would permit state tuition-assistance money to be used on undocumented immigrants who were brought here as children, have called on state leaders to include the measure in the state budget after the Senate failed to pass it by just two votes last week. The Assembly has already passed the measure.
"Every student deservers a fair shot, and if we can achieve that through the budget process, I fully support those efforts," Schneiderman said in a statement. "It must be enacted into law."
Following the March 17 vote, Schneiderman tweeted out that the "Senate's defeat of DREAM Act is an insult to immigrant families across #NY and abandonment of our ideals."
A potential Republican opponent to Schneiderman, John Cahill, a former top aide to ex-Gov. George Pataki, is also backing the inclusion of the DREAM Act in the state budget, which is due by the end of the month, a spokesman said.
In order to get the DREAM Act into the budget, insiders say, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver will likely have to consider trading it for an issue the Senate wants.
Some Latino lawmakers say they have discussed asking Silver to consider giving the Senate a number of appointments he controls to the Board of Regents or signing off on a tax credit to people who donate to private and public schools, though there's been no decision on what they will ask the of the speaker.
Critics oppose using taxpayer money on people in the country illegally.
While four states have passed their own DREAM Acts, the issue traditionally has not polled well in New York.
