NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico -- Authorities in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico arrested 10 suspected human smugglers and 42 Central American migrants headed to the U.S.

Victor Jimenez with the Federal Agency of Investigation says the group was caught Thursday walking on a dirt road to avoid a checkpoint 16 miles south of Nuevo Laredo.

Jimenez says the undocumented migrants were from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, and the guides are Mexican.

The alleged smugglers were turned over to federal prosecutors. The Central American migrants were sent to a detention center in Mexico City pending their deportation.
