MORENO VALLEY, CA - Federal officials Wednesday will celebrate the start of construction on a 22,000-square-foot U.S. Customs & Border Protection command center at March Air Reserve Base in Moreno Valley.

A groundbreaking ceremony was set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the south end of the base, on Customs Way off Graeber Street.

The CBP's $11 million Air and Marine Operations Center is slated to be built over the next 12 months, adjacent to where the current center is located, just east of the main runway.

The existing facility was erected in 1988 and apparently lacks the space for necessary upgrades.

The AMOC serves as the coordination hub for interdiction missions off the California coast as well as airborne interdiction missions along the U.S.- Mexico border, according to the CBP.

Personnel monitor air and sea traffic on a 24-hour basis. The new building will house the latest data processing, telecommunications and satellite-based tracking hardware available, according to the agency, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security.

In addition to coordinating helicopter and fixed-wing intercepts, the AMOC also handles unmanned aerial vehicle deployments, according to the CBP's website.

During Wednesday's ceremony, Border Patrol Air and Marine Operations Director Loren Flossman was scheduled to speak, along with Tony Crowder, the CBP's deputy commissioner for operations at March, and the base commander, U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Russell Muncy.
