Hays Man Charged With KHP Trooper Shooting

Monday, February 7, 2011

A Hays man has been charged in Ellis County District Court with attempted premeditated murder in connection with the January shooting of a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper.

Ruben Herrera Escobedo, 46, of Hays was charged Monday with with one count of attempted premeditated murder, a level 1 person felony; aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, a level 3 person felony; and driving under the influence of alcohol, a Class "B" nonperson misdemeanor.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on January 29, 2011, in which Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Doug Schulte was allegedly shot by the defendant following a traffic stop on a rural Ellis County road adjacent to Hays.

Trooper Schulte was struck by one bullet. He has since been released from the hospital and is recovering.

Escobedo remains in the Ellis County jail in lieu of $500,000 bond. The Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency has placed a hold on the suspect, meaning he would be turned over to immigration officials if he made bond.
