Rep. Culberson: 84 Percent of Illegals Caught Never Charged

Rep. John Culberson: 84 percent of illegal immigrants apprehended are never prosecuted
Texas Rep. John Culberson says illegal immigrants apprehended by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency have an 84 percent chance of not being prosecuted.

Rep. John Culberson
The figures were submitted by Culberson, R-Houston, to a House Appropriations subcommittee on homeland security hearing on March 17. (See the document in question at the bottom of this post.)
According to a report by CNSNews.com, a conservative web site, Culberson said that those in custody "had a chance of being home in time for dinner."
At the hearing, Culberson pushed to extend Operation Streamline, a program that fast-tracks prosecution and deportations of illegal immigrants crossing the border, to the entire southwest border.
"This is the key," said Culberson. "If we enforce existing law, impose real consequences and existing laws — up to six months in jail criminal prosecution depending on the circumstances."
Though the congressman expressed confidence in the effectiveness of the program, CNSNews.com reported that CBP Chief Michael Fisher disagreed, citing "different judicial districts" with varying capacities to handle the prosecution load.
CBP did not respond to requests from Texas on the Potomac for further comment.

This is a national disgrace that hard working American workers and businesses are taxed out their orifices to pay for a DHS that wastes our money usurping our laws to allow illegal aliens to rob Americans of their lives and livelihoods while bankrupting our governments.
DHS should be disbanded and primary responsibility for enforcing US immigration law taken up by the states and their 800,000 sworn, trained and ready state and local law enforcement officers to enforce US immigration law to the letter and dime. The US Congress needs to pass a simple law that denies federal funding to any state that fails to do so.A Nation Without Borders Is Not A Nation - Ronald Reagan

It has been claimed that more illegal immigrants are being apprehended than ever before, but what happens to them once arrested?
According to CNSNews.com, Texas Congressman John Culberson says an estimated 84 percent of apprehended illegal immigrants were never prosecuted.
Culberson submitted the figures for the record during a hearing Wednesday of the House Appropriations subcommittee on homeland security.
Of 447,731 illegal aliens apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol during fiscal year 2010 (which ended last September), only 73,263 (16.4 percent) were prosecuted, according to the submitted data. That means that 374,468 illegal aliens that were taken into custody (83.6 percent) were never prosecuted.
Culberson even said those who were not prosecuted "had a chance of being home in time for dinner" after being in custody for just a few hours. He then asserted that criminal consequences for those involved in illegal cross-boarder activity was "the key" to securing the nation's border with Mexico, the report states.
The Texas Republican suggested that Operation Streamline, a program that fast-tracks prosecution and deportations of illegal immigrants crossing the border, should be applied to the entire southwest border.
Culberson's figures state that of the 212,202 apprehensions along Arizona's Tucson sector just 30,748 led to prosecutions.

Congressman seeks tougher punishment for undocumented immigrants
by khou.com staff

HOUSTON -- Texas Congressman John Culberson says prosecutors aren't doing enough to punish undocumented immigrants.
He said border agents arrested more than 447,000 undocumented people between September 2009 and September 2010. Of those, only about 73,000 were prosecuted, he said. The rest were sent home without having to serve any jail time.
Culberson is calling on U.S. officials to enforce existing laws by prosecuting more cases.
