By BILL RANKIN

A former U.S. immigration official on Monday was sentenced to prison for taking a $100,000 bribe to bring aliens into the country illegally.

Hasmukh Patel, 53, of McDonough, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Atlanta to 3 years and 4 months in prison. He was once employed with Citizenship and Immigration Services, a division of the Department of Homeland Security.

According to federal prosecutors, Patel was paid $100,000 by a man living in the United States to arrange for the man’s brother and sister-in-law, both of whom lived in India, to come to the United States illegally. Patel was convicted at trial in April.
