One Killed When SUV Carrying Illegal Immigrants Crash

    Posted: July 14, 2008 08:34 AM PDT

(AP) - A speeding SUV packed with suspected illegal immigrants has crashed in northeastern Imperial County, killing the driver and injuring three passengers.

California Highway Patrol Officer Robert Sapp says the Chevrolet Suburban sped through a stop sign Sunday morning and tried to turn onto Highway 78 near the small town of Palo Verde. The SUV began sliding sideways, then rolled over.

Fire officials say up to 25 people are believed to have been crammed into the sport utility vehicle. Three injured passengers were taken to area hospitals, then turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.

The rest of the passengers ran off into the desert. Authorities did not immediately release the identity of the dead driver, but say the crash investigation continues. Palo Verde is 80 miles northeast of El Centro, near the Arizona border.
