TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Nogales Station Border Patrol agents apprehended a Honduran 18th Street gang member with an extensive criminal history after he entered the U.S. illegally near Nogales Tuesday evening.
During processing, agents identified the 51-year-old Hector Gustavo Montoya-Irias as a member of the dangerous 18th Street gang.
Montoya has been arrested by the Border Patrol several times; most recently in 2016 when he was convicted for drug smuggling offenses in Arizona, for which he served a 24-month prison before being removed from the country.
Arrest records gathered during his processing also revealed that Montoya was removed from the country more than 10 times for immigration violations dating back to 1993.
Montoya will be prosecuted for criminal immigration violations.
All persons apprehended by the Border Patrol undergo criminal history checks using biometrics to ensure illegal aliens with criminal histories are positively identified.
CBP welcomes assistance from the community. Citizens can report suspicious activity to the Border Patrol by calling 1-877-872-7435 toll free. All calls will be answered and remain anonymous.
