1/3 of DHS $57 billion budget for immigration agencies
One-third of DHS $57 billion budget request for immigration agencies

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano requested $57 billion in total funding for fiscal year 2012, up from $56.3 billion last year, from Congress Wednesday.
The request for funding appropriates about one-third of the funding requested to agencies that directly deal with immigration and border enforcement: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The budget request for U.S. Custom and Border Protection, which oversees the Border Patrol and Port of Entry operations, is $11.8 billion for fiscal year 2012, compared to $11.5 billion for fiscal year 2011.
The request for ICE is also up for fiscal year 2012 for a total of $5.8 billion, compared to $5.7 billion for fiscal year 2011.
Napolitano told Congress the request includes $242 million for new technology along the southwest border. This comes just weeks after the Department of Homeland Security canceled the "virtual fence," part of the Southwest Border Initiative. A billion dollars had been spent to develop the technology, it was killed because officials said the effort was not tailored toward regional needs.
The new funding for technology in the region will go toward a mix of "Integrated Fixed Towers and other mobile equipment in three of the five Border Patrol Stations' areas of responsibility in Arizona," among other goals.
