AZ: Group urges governor to veto immigration bill
Group urges governor to veto immigration bill
Associated Press - April 23, 2008 3:04 PM ET
PHOENIX (AP) - Hispanic civil rights advocates are urging Gov. Janet Napolitano to veto a proposed law requiring city and county police agencies to start programs to confront immigration violations.
Somos America, a coalition of groups that has organized immigration protests in Phoenix, says the measure would lead to racial profiling, damage the Latino community's cooperation with police and is unnecessary because federal law already allows for local police to get federal immigration training.
The Democratic governor declined to comment on the bill during a news briefing Wednesday. The bill won final approval in the Legislature Monday.
It would force police to be trained to spot immigration violations or take other steps to beef up enforcement.
