    GA-Gwinnett Checking Business Owners

    Gwinnett Checking Business Owners

Gwinnett County wants to know if it's business owners are in this country legally.

The county is sending out letters to more than 26,000 Gwinnett-based businesses, asking for compliance with a new state immigration law.

Under the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlement program, or SAVE, business license applicants must have proper documentation, or else their license will not be renewed.

"They will need to either state that they are a U.S. citizen, or a permanent U.S. resident, or they will state to us that they are here with a work authorization card or a work authorization document," David O'Kelley, the county's licensing and revenue manager tells WSB. "No proper documentation? No business occupation tax certificate."

All businesses, corporations, LLCs and partnerships registered in Gwinnett will receive the letter over the next few weeks. Applicants are required to return a signed, notarized affidavit before they can renew online or receive a 2010 business/occupation tax certificate.

The 26,000 letters is the most widespread effort to determine compliance with state law.

Since 2007, Gwinnett has been verifying the immigration status of applicants for jobs at the County and its primary contractors and subcontractors.

O'Kelley says the new state law requires total compliance and, with renewal notices being sent out by the county in January, Gwinnett decided to send the letters out now "in order to have a smooth renewal process. So we need to have these accounts updated prior to renewal."

I certainly hope what the business owners state will be backed up by documentation.
