RIO RICO, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

An illegal immigrant is in the hospital after falling off a cliff while reportedly fleeing from border patrol agents who later rescued him near Rio Rico, Ariz.

Authorities said Nogales Border Patrol agents attempted to apprehend two fleeing suspects when one of them fell from a cliff, resulting in cuts to the head and face, a broken leg and a possible back injury, according to a news release.

The Tucson Sector's Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue team stabilized the man. The Nogales Emergency Medical Services said it could take at least two hours to reach their location due to distance and terrain, so agents requested air support from OAM.

A UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter crew took the injured man to a safe location and the EMS transferred him to a local hospital.
