Judge throws out attempt to broaden Arizona's immigration measure

PHOENIX A judge has tossed out an attempt to broaden a voter-approved law aimed at keeping illegal immigrants from voting and obtaining certain government benefits.

A U-S district judge in Tucson previously agreed with a legal opinion by Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard that says the new state law applies only to some welfare programs.

Goddard's opinion was meant to provide public employees with guidance on applying the law passed in November as Proposition 200 and protection under state law.

Yesterday, Superior Court Judge Barbara M. Jarrett upheld Goddard's interpretation by dismissing a court action brought by backers of Prop 200 seeking an injunction against Goddard's opinion.

Goddard, concluded that undocumented immigrants could receive free school lunches, immunizations and library cards without being referred to immigration authorities.
