PHOENIX -- Manslaughter and aggravated assault charges have been filed against a man accused of causing a fatal car accident last weekend.
Early last Sunday morning, Eduardo Soto-Ramirez, 19, was driving westbound on West Broadway Road at 35th Avenue when he reportedly failed to stop at a red light.
Soto-Ramirez hit a truck that was driven by Viridiana Espinoza, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time. Espinoza was ejected from her truck during the accident, and taken to St. Josephs Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
A 15-year-old girl who was riding with Espinoza was also seriously injured. She is currently in the intensive care unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Soto-Ramirez was taken to Banner Good Samaritan Hospital where he was treated for injuries that included a fracture of a spinal vertebrae and lacerations to his face.
While he was in the hospital, Soto-Ramirez was evaluated by investigators for possibly driving while impaired. A blood sample revealed that his blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit.
It was also discovered that Soto-Ramirez’s driving privileges had been suspended and that he is in the country illegally.
