AZ: "New & improved" virtual border fence face

"New & improved" virtual border fence faces key test

What the Department of Homeland Security hopes is a new and improved virtual border fence faces a key test in November.

Published reports say a section of the virtual fence south of Tucson will undergo preliminary testing this month. If it works the Border Patrol will take it for a trial run early next year.

A demonstration project built outside Sasabe two years ago featured an array of camera and sensor towers but never did work properly. Primary contractor Boeing says it learned from its mistakes.

A recent report from the Government Accounting Office raised questions about the cost of building, operating and maintaining the border fence program, both physical and virtual.
