CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -- Pinal County sheriff's deputies responded to several shots fired calls late Monday night in Casa Grande. In the area, they said they found a car in the middle of the roadway and found 31-year-old Roberto Raya-Ortiz shot multiple times inside the car.

Witnesses told deputies an older model Chevrolet Impala pulled up next to Raya-Ortiz and shot several times into his car before speeding away.

When deputies notified the victim's family, relatives told deputies that Raya-Ortiz had been fearful of Mexico drug cartel retaliation. They explained that he was involved in drug trafficking from Mexico and that the cartels felt he was a "snitch." Relatives also told deputies that Raya-Ortiz was in the United States illegally. He was awaiting a deportation hearing.

CASA GRANDE, AZ - A murder investigation is underway in Casa Grande after a man was found shot to death in his car on Monday night.

Tim Gaffney with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said PCSO received several 911 calls reporting shots being fired in the area of Sherbundy and Guinn drives at 11:30 p.m.

Deputies responded to the area and found a Dodge Stratus parked in the middle of the roadway, according to PCSO.

Roberto Raya-Ortiz, 31, was reportedly found shot to death inside the vehicle.

Witnesses reported seeing an early 2000 model Chevrolet Impala pull up next to the vehicle Raya-Ortiz was driving and several shots were fired, according to PCSO.

The suspect vehicle then reportedly sped away westbound on Sherbundy.

PCSO said the suspect vehicle description was sent out to law enforcement agencies in the area, but it was not located.

Relatives reportedly told investigators that Raya-Ortiz was involved with drug trafficking from Mexico.

According to relatives, Raya-Ortiz was responsible for transporting "scouts" to various locations in Pinal County.

Prior to his death, Raya-Ortiz had reportedly told relatives he was fearful for his safety because cartels felt he was "a snitch."

Raya-Ortiz is a citizen of Mexico and was in the United States illegally, according to PCSO.

He was awaiting a deportation hearing, according to relatives.

If any one has any information regarding this case, they are asked to please contact the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.
