Border officer indicted, charged with helping illegal immigrants cross

A border patrol officer was indicted today on charges of taking bribes and conspiring to allow illegal immigrants and drugs into the United States, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Luis Francisco Alarid, 31, of San Diego, is accused of taking $200,000 in bribes to let illegal immigrants and drugs into the country at the Otay-Mesa crossing.

Alarid, who worked for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, is accused of letting in one vehicle — driven by his uncle — that carried more than 170 pounds of marijuana and 18 illegal immigrants
