Backlash for hard-liners on immigration

Candidates are finding it costly to take a hard-line approach on U.S. immigration in Arizona and Colorado, where the issue is a top concern.

Stateline.org said Democratic candidates for governor in Arizona and Colorado lead their opponents by double digits and illegal immigration is seen as a reason.

A poll conducted by Arizona State University showed Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano has outpaced her Republican challenger Len Munsil 67 percent to 24 percent. Napolitano vetoed eight bills related to illegal immigration this year.

In Colorado, the Democratic candidate for governor Bill Ritter is ahead of Republican Bob Beauprez 52 percent to 33 percent according to a poll by TV news KUSA in Denver.

Democratic pollster Chris Dorvall told Stateline.org, "The conventional wisdom was Democrats would get burned on (immigration), but what's interesting is that's not happening in places like Arizona, which is Ground Zero."

An October poll released by the conservative group Center for Immigration Studies found 53 percent of people in the United States asked ranked illegal immigration as one of three top concerns.

Does anyone really expect us to take a poll such as this, conducted by Arizona State University, seriously? We all know the university wants illegal immigrants to attend with the tuition being subsidized by state taxpayers (in-state tuition). Doesn't Napolitano support in-state tuition for illegals?

Sure don't understand why Napolitano is so popular. Would someone from Arizona please explain this to us?
Wonder who the university polled? Students?
I'm scratching my head over that state.
Maybe I shouldn't be too critical of Arizona since I live in CA. Maybe in the border states politicians feel like they're walking on eggs with so many illegals here.
