County men charged in cocaine ring bust
    6:16 p.m. May 3, 2006

MORENO VALLEY – Two Riverside County men arrested in connection with a large-scale drug distribution ring were among nine people charged Wednesday with conspiracy to possess, transport and sell cocaine.
Derwin Lashun Webster, 31, of Moreno Valley, and the suspected ringleader, Steven Montes, 32, of West Covina each pleaded not guilty.

They were jailed on $5 million bail pending their next appearance May 11 at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse.
Enjobul Kareem King, 33, also of Moreno Valley, is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, along with Antonio Anguiano, 23.

Los Angeles County prosecutors are seeking the extradition of Omar Cruz, 19, Rufino Acevedo, 53, and Joel Huerta Nunez, 40, who were arrested in the Chicago suburb of Dupage.

Two other men, Samuel Vivoros Murrillo, 49, and Agustin Alvarez, 21, are fugitives, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

All nine are charged with conspiracy to possess cocaine for sale and conspiracy to transport and sell cocaine.

The defendants are variously named in 10 other counts, including unlawful possession of money and “negotiable instruments” obtained from the sale of cocaine; possession of marijuana and cocaine for sale; transportation of marijuana and cocaine; and possession of a false compartment “with the intent to store, conceal, smuggle and transport a controlled substance.”

“Operation Micho” was begun last November by special agents with the state's Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement's Border Interdiction Team in San Diego, which conducts investigations involving large-scale drug trafficking and smuggling of narcotics into California from Mexico.

Authorities said yesterday that the investigation resulted in the seizure of 776 pounds of cocaine worth an estimated $28 million and 657 pounds of marijuana valued at $466,000.
Investigators also seized more than $1.1 million in U.S. currency, six handguns, two tractor-trailer trucks and several other vehicles.

The drug ring moved narcotics that had been smuggled in from Mexico to the Midwest and Atlantic Coast, officials said.

“Los Angeles has become the warehouse of the nation for cocaine,” said Deputy District Attorney Sean Carney, who will prosecute the case.
Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement agents identified Montes as the alleged head of the ring, which used tractor-trailer trucks to distribute cocaine from Los Angeles to Chicago, and to the states of Indiana and New York, state Attorney General Bill Lockyer said yesterday.

Montes allegedly used a residence in Riverside County's Moreno Valley to store large quantities of narcotics and cash.

Ya.....where's the big "war on drugs"? Just another one of the many scams we've gotten used to. They have about as much interest in ending that problem than they do illegal immigration.
