MCALLEN - The Department of Homeland Security has been quick to issue new guidelines for federal law enforcement agents regarding the arrest and deportation of illegal immigrants.

DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson's visited the Valley a day after president Obama announced he will take executive action to allow approximately 5 million illegal immigrants to remain in the country.

The president said the move will not give illegal immigrants the opportunity to gain legal residency or citizenship. Instead, the executive action will only halt deportation and give immigrants temporary work permits.

Johnson told agents in McAllen changes will be made to the way illegal immigrants are investigated, processed and deported.

Department of Homeland Secretary Jeh Johnson told Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol agents Friday that their priorities will change.

"We are realigning our enforcement priorities in a way I believe will better get threats of public safety and border security," Johnson said.

Johnson laid out three levels of priorities for deportation of illegal immigrants.
