Biker group promotes anti-illegal immigration message in R.I.
    August 9, 2006

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --A motorcycle group promoting a message against illegal immigration arrived in Rhode Island as part of a national tour of state capitols, but was met at the Statehouse by protesters angry about the bikers' agenda.

The group, known as "21st Century Paul Revere Ride," has embarked on a 17,000-mile journey around the country to campaign against illegal immigration, which it believes can lead to crime, disease and overpopulation.

But on Tuesday, about two dozen demonstrators with bullhorns and cymbals tried to shout down the group's message at the Statehouse, chanting, "Get Up! Get Down! Get the Racists Out of Our Town!"

"We are not criminals. We came to work here," said Julio Cesar Aragon, president of the Mexican-American Association of Rhode Island, who attended the demonstration. "We are here to help this economy."

The group's visit to 48 state capitols began at the end of May and concludes this weekend in Washington, D.C.

"Oh yeah, this is about the tenth state where we've had opposition," said ride coordinator Howard Wooldridge, a retired police detective. "We're here to open debate, and they're here to shut off debate."

The motorcycle group drove away from the Statehouse on Tuesday morning to chants of, "Racists go home!"
"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on." - Franklin D. Roosevelt
