Report: 5% of kids in U.S. born to illegal aliens
Report: 5% of kids in U.S. born to illegal immigrants
Updated 4m ago
By Alan Gomez, USA TODAY
Four million children in the U.S. were born of illegal immigrant parents but were granted U.S. citizenship because they were born on American soil, according to a report released today.
Those children represented about 5% of all the children in the U.S. under the age of 18 in 2009, according to the report from the Pew Hispanic Center. That percentage will increase in the future, however, as an estimated 340,000 of the 4.3 million babies born in the U.S. in 2008 — about 8% — came from illegal immigrant parents, the report says.
The study comes as some legislators, including U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., are calling for a revision of the 14th Amendment that grants automatic citizenship to anyone born in the United States.
Bob Dane, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which wants lower levels of legal and illegal immigration, said automatic citizenship for children born in the U.S. is one of the two main magnets for illegal immigration.

Dane said many illegal immigrants are searching for jobs. But he said many others come to have an "anchor baby" that is entitled to a wide array of government benefits and can eventually help the parents become citizens as well. He calls the practice a "corruption of the rule of law."
Ali Noorani, executive director of the National Immigration Forum, which supports a process for some illegal immigrants to become citizens, said stripping away birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants would be a colossal mistake.
"It puts the United States of America on the brink of legalizing apartheid," he said. "To take such an extreme move and create a permanent population without a nation is scary."
Noorani said some people have always fought for a change to the 14th Amendment's birthright clause but he has been shocked to see how it is suddenly being embraced by high-ranking members of Congress. He thinks the upcoming November elections are the reason.
"This is a pathetic attempt to gin up a (voting) base," he said. "This is political fear-mongering."

I would have thought that number to be grossly underestimated.
And then I reconsidered - the 14 year old anchor babies are having babies.
How could I be so stupid?

The Wall Street Journal says it is 8% -- I think it is even higher:

This article from UPI also reports it as 8%.
Illegal aliens more likely to have kids
Published: Aug. 11, 2010 at 5:57 PM
WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- While illegal immigrants are only 4 percent of the U.S. population, they produced 8 percent of the children born in 2008, a report released Wednesday said.
About 7 percent of children under 18 living in the United States have parents who are undocumented, the Pew Hispanic Center said. The vast majority of those children, 79 percent, were U.S.-born and entitled to citizenship.
The 14th Amendment, adopted after the Civil War to ensure the descendants of black slaves could not be denied citizenship, gives that right to anyone born within U.S. borders. Some immigration critics are now calling for repeal, arguing that people who enter the country illegally are deliberately having children in the hope that will increase their chance of staying.
Undocumented immigrants tend to have disproportionately more children because they tend to be young and to have larger families, the report said.
The report, "Unauthorized Immigrants and Their U.S.-born Children," is based on data from the U.S. Census March 2009 Current Population Survey.

Unauthorized Immigrants and Their U.S.-Born Children

An estimated 340,000 of the 4.3 million babies born in the United States in 2008 were the offspring of unauthorized immigrants, according to a new analysis of Census Bureau data by the Pew Hispanic Center.
Unauthorized immigrants comprise slightly more than 4% of the adult population of the U.S., but because they are relatively young and have high birthrates, their children make up a much larger share of both the newborn population (8%) and the child population (7% of those younger than age 18) in this country.
These figures are based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s March 2009 Current Population Survey, augmented with the Pew Hispanic Center’s analysis of the demographic characteristics of the unauthorized immigrant population using a "residual estimation methodology" it has employed for the past five years.
The new Pew Hispanic analysis finds that nearly four-in-five (79%) of the 5.1 million children (younger than age 18) of unauthorized immigrants were born in this country and therefore are U.S. citizens. In total, 4 million U.S.-born children of unauthorized immigrant parents resided in this country in 2009, alongside 1.1 million foreign-born children of unauthorized immigrant parents.

Pew Report Implies Our Borders Are Not Kid-Proof
By David North, August 12, 2010
Reading the recently released Pew report on the remarkable fertility of illegal aliens – twice that of Americans generally – I detected something else.
Our borders are not only porous for adult illegals, they are clearly not kid-proof either.
Mentioned, but not stressed, in the media coverage of the Pew study is one fact: there are 1.1 million foreign-born children of illegal alien parents. They are all 17 or younger. The strong implication is that almost all of them are in illegal status.
How did they get here? Apparently through or around our immigration control system.
Some of them arrived recently, I am sure, as teenagers, probably more able-bodied than many adults. But many others arrived, apparently, as small children or infants.
Most presumably entered without inspection, in many cases toddling or being carried over the border. Some must have come in on tourist visas, which they later abused.
These 1.1 million children are a quiet proof of the laxity of our border controls.
