LA police find car belonging to suspect in Denver shooting

DENVER - The search for a fugitive suspected of gunning down a Denver police officer spread to Southern California Thursday after the man's car was found behind a Los Angeles residence.

More than 200 officers were searching the area for 19-year-old Raul Garcia-Gomez, accused in the shooting death of Donald R. Young, a decorated police detective.

Police Chief Gerry Whitman said authorities searched the residence where Gomez's car was found and went to several other homes, but he wouldn't discuss specifics.

Gomez may have fled to Mexico and border agents have been notified, Whitman said.

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey wouldn't speculate on extradition if Gomez crosses the border, but he said the process can be difficult, especially in a first-degree murder case.

Some countries refuse to extradite suspects to the United States if they could face the death penalty.

"Our primary goal is to get him in custody, wherever he is," Morrissey said.

Gomez is suspected of ambushing Young and fellow detective John H. Bishop early Sunday morning as they worked off-duty providing security for a baptismal party outside a rented hall. Both men were in uniform.

Young, 43, a married father of two and a recipient of the police Medal of Honor, was shot three times. Bishop was treated for a minor gunshot wound.

Police said Gomez remained in Denver long enough to complete an eight-hour shift as a dishwasher at the Cherry Cricket bar and restaurant that began hours after the shooting Sunday.

Lee Driscoll, chief executive of the parent company of the Cherry Cricket, said Gomez has not been seen since.

Crime Stoppers offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and charges in the case.

Young's name was added to a memorial outside police headquarters Thursday morning as more than 50 police officers and department workers silently looked on. Some cried, others stood stoically behind dark sunglasses as the letters of his name were sandblasted on the marble wall, which was draped with a black sash.

Sixty names are now engraved on the memorial.
