ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Nearly a dozen people were shot to death over the weekend in the Pacific coast resort of Acapulco, police said Sunday.

Eight of the victims were killed Sunday and three on Saturday, said a statement from the public safety department in the state of Guerrero, where Acapulco is located.

Early Sunday, four men were gunned down by assailants firing from two passing cars, the statement said. A fifth, 36-year-old man, was injured.

Also Sunday, authorities discovered the bodies of a 23-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man who had been shot to death. The man's hands had been bound and his eyes blindfolded.

In a separate section of the city, authorities found the bodies of two men estimated to be in their 20s who also had been shot to death.

Messages believed to have been left by drug traffickers were found next to their bodies, the statement said.

On Saturday, the body of a man who had been beaten in several places was found half-buried in the ground wrapped in a bedspread, while two men who had been shot were found in a graveyard.

One of them had died of a gunshot wound to the back of the neck, and the other died of bullet wounds on the way to a hospital.

Authorities had not detained any suspects.

Acapulco has experienced a spike of drug-related violence in recent months.
