Serrato said he may quit harvesting citrus trees next year because
the pay is about $100 a day for farm workers,
while the pay nearly triples for avocado pickers.
Avocado work pays better, and it's somewhat easier to find helpers, despite the tough work of climbing 40-foot-high trees with rickety ladders, on hillsides in rocky terrain, he said.

These farmers shouldn't be having any problems finding help. Dreamers who are young adults should be right there taking those jobs. All the farmers would have to do is give dreamers a ride to the farm and pay for a GED night teacher as a job perk.
Oh silly me maybe these dreamers aren't as hard working as we're told they are?

It's a vicious circle. Farmers and ranchers hire illegals for cheap, and state and federal governments look the other way. As Barbara Jordan discovered when she looked into the temporary labor markets, when a job becomes associated with immigrants, the locals don't want to do that job. Factor in the low wages that illegals will work for, and a situation develops where citizens don't even think about doing that job.
This situation can be corrected, but the correction won't happen overnight. Those who profited from illegal labor will have to advertise, pay, and probably even train citizens and legal residents to do this difficult work.
Consumers will have to pay more. But the increased costs will be allocated among a large number of units, so the costs should be bearable.
If the federal government would do its job and require universal E-Verify, in a few years we should see Americans once again doing those jobs that they did do before federal and state governments started looking the other way.
