Vicente Fox says border walls should be torn down

Vicente Fox says border walls should be torn down
    Story by Lindsey Elliott (Contact)

    8:29 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2008

A crowd that filled McCain Auditorium erupted in applause and gave former Mexican President Vicente Fox a standing ovation.

"He was a very compelling speaker," Kansas State student Janell Friesen said.

Fox spoke to a crowd of more than 1,500 students and faculty as part of the Landon Lecture series.

He emphasized the need for countries to work together.

"You gain respect by love. That's the way you gain respect. So that's the kind of world we need," Fox said.

But the resonating message of his speech was ways to tackle the immigration issue.

"Walls should not be built, bridges should be built. I think that was probably the most interesting thing," Kansas State student Barrett Smith said.

Smith grew up in southwest Kansas and says he has felt the impact from the current immigration laws.

"And I watched families get torn by having family members get sent back to Mexico and it's very hard to watch that happen," he said.

Others, like Socorro Herrera, related to immigration for a different reason.

"I am originally from Mexico," Kansas State professor Herrera said.

Her family immigrated to the United States when she was in grade school. Herrera says the walls need to be torn down because immigration has helped build our nation.

"I'd like to think that I'm giving back to the United States daily through working in schools and working with young children and working in high schools," she said.

Members of the audience say Fox's lecture made them think outside the box.

"It's always good to broaden your horizons on different world views. It's so easy to have our little American bubble and to not look outside of that," Friesen said.

Granted. But may I ask where is the diffentiation between legal and illegal immigration? And if these university students are supporting Fox's interests (for nothing but his own country and its interests) they are either stupid, brainwashed or having no idea what the problems in this country really are.

This new generation of college students are very anti-intellectual and susceptible to being lead around by the nose whenever they are told that something is "global" or "multicultural". Alot like the Moonies. Psychologists have a term for it: "Thought Reform".
